As a customer of Tennessee American Water, you may think twice when turning your faucet.

Tennessee American Water is a private, for-profit company managed by American Water of New Jersey. With millions of customers across the nation, American Water can’t provide the level of customer service and transparency of a local utility. Stopping by or calling your utility with a question or concern will no longer be an option if water is privatized. Try calling 1-866-736-6420, Tennessee American Water’s customer service line. An automated message is a far cry from an honest conversation with your utility’s management.

A look at Tennessee American Water’s Quality Report makes matters worse. While all utilities use chlorine to clean drinking water, Tennessee American Water is using close to the maximum levels of chlorine allowed to clean Tennessee River water. According to the U.S. Council of Environmental Quality, cancer risk among people drinking chlorinated water is 93% higher than among those whose water does not contain chlorine.

If you think privatization of a public utility is a good idea, Protect Our Water encourages you to educate yourself. We are in the position to learn from others’ mistakes. We can even learn from our own neighbors who are Tennessee American Water customers. The Better Business Bureau has received numerous complaints about inflated rates and poor customer service.

For your wallet, your wellbeing and most importantly, your health, educate yourself about the importance of Protecting Our Water.

Towns sell their public water systems — and come to regret it

Elected officials and the public “should ask good questions, and they should understand the trade-offs” before agreeing to sell municipal water systems, said Janice Beecher, who studies public and private systems as director of Michigan State University’s Institute of Public Utilities. Selling a publicly owned water utility “shouldn’t be rushed,” she warned. “Once it’s gone, it’s gone.”

“Access to clean, affordable drinking water is a human right,” said Rianna Eckel, Maryland Organizer at Food & Water Watch. “What’s happening in Camden is a foreshadowing of what could very easily happen in Baltimore if Mayor Pugh doesn’t stop privatization before it starts. The last thing our city needs is water bill rate hikes and shut-offs.”
